Tennessee Titans free agent receiver Nate Washington admitted during the May mini-camps that he was still in the process of learning the nuances of the offense after signing as a free agent from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Now, a month later with one more week of organized team activities to come, Washington says he is on target with his assignments and the timing of his routes with quarterback Kerry Collins.

“It’s pretty much all there. Now, I’m trying to get open better. I pretty much know where I’m supposed to be and know the timing of getting there,” he said. “You’re not going to be able to run the same route twice. Even in the same route, you have to switch it up a little bit. That’s all it is — putting a little bit of freelance in there.”

Washington’s improved understanding of where he needs to be showed in last Friday’s red zone work when he made a nice leaping grab of a Collins pass and got both feet down in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.

The Titans brought Washington aboard during the off-season to help shore up their receiving corps and provide a more consistent deep threat than what Brandon Jones and Justin McCareins proved to be last year.

For Washington, the upcoming season will be his first chance to show what he can do as a full-time starter. Washington had 40 receptions for the Super Bowl champion Steelers last year, playing the No. 3 role behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.
