Betsy Beaver opened the NAIA Women’s Golf Championship with a biride Tuesday and led Trevecca Nazarne University to 22nd place out of 28 teams after the first round in Rapid City, S.D.

Beaver, a junior, did not make another birdie but made par on six of her final seven holes and finished with a team-best 8-over (80) on a difficult day for scoring.

She was among the top 50 individuals. Only one in the field of 144 broke par.

Senior Brooke Dillehay was the only other Trevecca golfer who made any birdies. She had two (Nos. 3 and 12) but also had just two pars and was 17-over (89). Freshman Ashley Birdwell was 11-over (83) and junior Alyssa Moe was 15-over (87).

California Baptist claimed the first-round lead with an overall score of 9-over, five strokes ahead of Oklahoma City and British Columbia, the second of which was paired with the Lady Trojans.

The 72-hole event continues through Friday. The field will be reduced to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals after the third round.
