JACKSON – Nathan Wright hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Trevecca Nazarene’s rally – and its bid for the TranSouth baseball tournament championship – fell short with a 9-7 loss to Union on Thursday.
Wright was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBis, but the Trojans (35-23) trailed by five (8-3) after four innings and never fully recovered.
First baseman Cody Heggie and shortstop Aaron Bree added three hits apiece for the Trojans, who lost in the championship round for the third straight year. Cumberland won the title in 2007 and 2008.
David Maristany hit a three-run home run as Union (36-17) went ahead to stay with six runs in the second inning. The Bulldogs were the No, 5 seed, but went 4-0 in the tournament, beginning with a 3-1 victory over Trevecca on Monday.
Trevecca will find out Friday afternoon whether or not it has earned an invitation to the NAIA national tournament.
