Wayne Jones, a freshman football player at Tennessee State University, died Wednesday after he collapsed during an early evening practice.

The 19-year-old defensive back from Smyrna was unresponsive after he passed out at approximately 4 p.m. He was taken to Baptist Medical Center but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m., according to information released by the athletics department.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

“This is a very tragic day for our entire Tennessee State University community and we are devastated by the sudden passing of this young man,” Athletics Director Teresa Phillips said in a statement released by the university. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time.

“Our University and our football team are hurting as we feel the loss of one of our own. As a team and a family we will grieve alongside the family and do everything we can to help support them through this very difficult time.”

Jones had not played this season for the Tigers, who are 8-2 overall following last Saturday’s loss to Murray State.

The team has an open date this week and does not play again until it concludes the regular season Nov. 17 at UT-Martin.
