Kevin Stallings admitted that he made concessions to his team’s youth when he put together the non-conference portion of Vanderbilt’s 2008-09 non-conference schedule.
Now his team is a year older and Stallings is a bit wiser in the wake of a postseason snub, and the Commodores’ non-conference opponents for the coming season reflect as much.
In addition to a spate of local opponents, VU will face Cincinnati, Missouri, DePaul and Illinois and possibly Maryland, among others. The Cincinnati and Maryland matchups will be during the EA Sports Maui Invitational during Thanksgiving weekend. Missouri and DePaul will visit Memorial Gymnasium three days apart at the start of December.
Additionally, VU will face Lipscomb, Tennessee State and MTSU – all at Memorial Gymnasium – and Western Kentucky at the Sommet Center.
The Commodores went 11-3 against non-conference foes last season. Victories over the likes of Drake, Alabama A&M, Furman and South Florida were not enough to earn an invitation to either the NCAA or National Invitation tournaments despite the fact that VU was 8-8 in conference play.
Stallings will address the coming season and aspects of the schedules in a meeting with the local media Wednesday afternoon. Look for a report on that session at nashvillecitypaper.com.
The Southeastern Conference will release the conference schedule at a later date.
