A Vanderbilt baseball signee from Parsons, Tenn., died Tuesday as the result of an apparent suicide.

Stephen Gant, a senior at Riverside High School, was pronounced dead on Tuesday, Vanderbilt spokesperson Kyle Parkinson confirmed.

"This stops you right in your tracks,” VU coach Tim Corbin said in a release from the university's athletics department. “These are life occurrences that can't be explained ... there are no 'do-overs.'

"We are all deeply saddened for Gloria, Tony, his brothers and sister as well as the many friends that Stephen had. All we can do is be supportive for the family and be there for them."

The Commodores are scheduled to host Tennessee-Martin, 6:30 p.m. at Hawkins Field.

According to a report in the Jackson Sun, Gant’s body was found on the side of the road in Perry County from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gant was the Sun’s three-time baseball year, and was projected as a first-round pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.

Lord, I hate hearing this. I hope the family can find peace one day.

One always hates to see a successful young person suddenly think he or she has an insurmountable problem. I hope that the failure of this years Vanderbilt team was not the cause of this young man's death. There is much more to life than a baseball team.

Rasputin: You are one sick, sick puppy. I feel slimey just replying to your post. This will be my last one. RIP Stephen Gant - May peace be with your family.

SJOHN....Not only do you feel slimey you perhaps have slimey thoughts if you think my post meant any disrespect to this young man and his family.

This is so unbelievable.
How could a senior, who's 18, with a family, kill himself? Do they have ANY idea what that does to his brothers and sister, and parents? The guilt, remorse.
How INCREDIBLY selfish.

Rasputin: Hinting that this man's death could be related to VU's baseball season? What's that, Rasputin? You're moral compass is so out-of-wack when ANYTHING VU is involved. Surely you're balant hatred for VU is not just 'fan' based! What happened? Did you lose a loved one in their hospital, or something? The angst beyond the norm of cheering against another school? If you can't see making a absurd connection to his death and a college baseball team having an off year, well, you'll just continue to make stupid, insensitivity remarks. I hope Gant's family does not read your bull-larkey!

SJohn.......The only absurd comments I have read are yours. Perhaps you know the reasons for this young man's suicide?

By: SJohn on 4/4/12 at 10:44

No, I don't have a clue. But I'm not the one who wrote "...hope the failure of this years Vanderbilt team was not the cause....." Wow, how simple minded and absurd is that! Give me a break. Now go back to you're computer and continue making an A** out of yourself because people like you aren't capable of having an ah hah moment and begin seeing life in a more balanced way. News Flash - VU is not Darth Vader!

SJOHN.......I do not have a clue either. I cannot imagine the grief that this boys family is feeling now. When it comes to suicide most of us think any reason is ridiculous especially from a boy as talented academically and athletically as this young man.

I sent two daughters to Vanderbilt. I was the Vanderbilt bat boy years ago. Before I began to spend more time away from Nashville I was a Commodore Club member.

I see Vanderbilt through entirely different eyes than yourself. I have lots of experience at seeing Vanderbilt create misery out of joy.

VU must have acted in a way to really hack you off. I've read several of your posts in the past (which seemed tinged with a plateful of animosity) and didn't comment because I imagined you were a immature UT homer, probably less than 25 years of age. Guess I was wrong on my assessment. I've been following VU for 55 years, of which there has been disappointment after disappointment, but I've stayed the ship. Seriously, do you not feel a new energy of competitiveness on West End?

Retrospecitvely, this post is about Stephen Gann and I want to end this with the wish that God blesses his soul and brings some comfort to his family. RIP Stephen........

I am saddened not only by the news but by the useless comments that have been left and the back and forth bickering. A young life has been lost. Parents and family members are devastated. Please show respect and take your arguments outside.

To the family, relatives and close friends: I pray that someday you will find peace. I also pray that the young brilliant life cut short will find peace. May God bless him and find a place for him with the angels in heaven.

SADDENDED.....I agree 100%. I apologize for my comments that led to this bickering and disrespect for the family.
