That’s four for Florida.

Vanderbilt’s fourth loss to the Gators this season (the teams have played five times) came Tuesday morning in the completion of a College World Series contest started Monday but suspended by rain in the sixth inning. Neither team scored following the resumption of play and the Commodores fell 3-1.

VU now has to win three times, including twice against Florida, in order to earn a spot in the championship round. Its first elimination contest is 6 p.m. Wednesday against North Carolina.

Florida needs one win to reach the title series.

"I think losses are frustrating, period," Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. "It's been very close with the exception of the SEC Tournament [a 5-0 Florida victory]. That was basically their game because they pitched very well and we didn't hit. The Commodores had two out and nobody on in the bottom of the sixth when play was halted Monday."

Jason Esposito struck out when play resumed Tuesday and the Commodores failed to record a hit.

Connor Harrell walked in the seventh and was the only VU player to reach base in the final four innings. Harrell also singled in the fifth inning and scored the Commodores’ only run on Monday.

Florida’s Steve Rodriguez came on in relief after that run, got out of the inning, recorded the first two outs in the sixth and was back on the mound following the delay. Rodriguez struck out seven, including the final two batters, and did not allow a hit in 4.1 innings.

Vanderbilt used two pitchers, Will Clinard and Corey Williams, when play resumed. They combined for one strikeout and no hits allowed.

"Earlier this year we played Florida and we also had a rain delay," Clinard said. "We had the right mindset coming into this game because we've been here before. I was coming in before the rain delay. I knew I'd have the ball this afternoon. So I had overnight to prepare for this, so we were definitely prepared to come in and beat them."

Not even a fine coach and fine athletes can overcome the Vanderbilt legacy of being a loser.

frank, you are the biggest pessimist here. It could be 70 degrees and bright sunshine and you would swear it was raining. You like to be negative because then you don't have to set any goals and be disappointed when you don't reach them. Now that, is what I call a loser.

The only goals I set are the ones that I know I can make. The biggest flaw in the personality of almost all people is the fact that so many have unrealistic expectations. This leads to depression, failure, divorce, suicide and unhappiness.

Thank you for proving my point.
