Herb Hand coaches offensive linemen for a living. But he is close to landing a side gig to show his skills in the kitchen.

The Vanderbilt assistant coach let his 5,000-plus Twitter followers know on Wednesday he has made the final level of casting for Chopped, a cooking show on the Food Network. The weekly show pits four chefs (amateur chefs, in his case) in a competition to win $10,000.

Contestants must improvise and make a dish with a mystery basket of ingredients that is judged on creativity, presentation and taste. The show consists of three rounds – appetizer, entrée and dessert.

“When I win the dessert round, I’m leading @ChopTedAllen in an 'ESS EEE CEE' chant while flashing the VU hand sign. #ANCHORDOWN,” Hand tweeted on Wednesday.

Hand is currently on vacation nearly two months away from the Commodores' season opener against Ole Miss on Aug. 29. Now in his fourth season, he was the lone assistant retained when Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin arrived after the 2010 season.

I can't wait to see this episode, and compare to the Titans players who also cooked on Food Network during Super Bowl Week. This kind of competition would make Mike Keith scream.
