Vanderbilt football sets rosters for Saturday's spring game

Vanderbilt offensive linemen won’t work double in this spring game.

Due to thin numbers the last two years, the big men up front have played for both sides during the annual intra-squad scrimmage. Last year, the Commodores only had seven linemen in spring workouts.

This April, there are 13 bruising bodies to divvy up over the two teams for the Black & Gold Spring Game on Saturday at Vanderbilt Stadium. Six veteran blockers will play for the Black while seven will line up for the Gold.

In general, the Commodores hope to see a more even spring game.

The rosters were announced Thursday morning and the Black team is comprised of the first-team offense and defense while the Gold consists of second-team offense and defense. To see the full rosters, click here.

Offensive coordinator John Donovan will lead the Black and defensive coordinator Bob Shoop will coach the Gold. Third-year coach James Franklin will monitor the game from the field.

While increased depth at the offensive line is a welcome sight, Franklin has been pleased with the shared playing time across the field.

“Not everybody at this point of spring ball is still getting the [third team] as many reps as we’re getting them,” Franklin said earlier this week. “That is great for our team and that is great for them individually. They got to take advantage of them. What we’re trying to do is create depth. This spring we’ve been able to get a lot of really good work from a lot of different guys that has kept the other guys a little bit fresh as well. We should have a great spring game on Saturday.”

The spring game will begin at 1 p.m. and will be shown on tape delay by Comcast Sports Southeast at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and Gate 2 will open at 11 a.m. The 'Vandyville' tailgate area opens at 10 a.m. and an autograph session with players and coaches will take place immediately after the game.
