First-year Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin hopes to set a tone for his program when he opens the 2011 season against Elon. No matter what happens, he certainly won’t set a precedent.

In case anyone wondered whether the Commodores planned to open every season with what looks like a game it ought to win, those questions were answered Wednesday.

Two years from now Vanderbilt will open at Ohio State.

OSU announced that the Aug. 31, 2013, contest is one of two non-conference contests confirmed for that season. The university released that news in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference’s revelation of its 2013 and 2014 conference schedules.

Vanderbilt and Ohio State have met four times previously in football, the last in 1933. The Commodores have just one victory in the series.

The 2011 season, VU’s first with Franklin in charge, opens Sept. 3 at Vanderbilt Stadium and includes the first three games at home.

Elon is a Football Championship Subdivision program that went 6-5 overall in 2010.

Ohio State is the best team in the Big Ten but they have a lot of trouble with the SEC. In order to clear "can't factor with the players who are intimidated by SEC football teams Tressel has arranged for a scrimmage with Vanderbilt in order to say to his boys, "See I told you that you could beat these SEC teams." Then he walks away snickering to himself, "Vanderbilt is to the SEC what the Durham Bulls are to the major leagues."
