Vanderbilt opens NCAA Regional tennis at Illinois

Vanderbilt, making its 15th straight appearance in the NCAA women’s tennis tournament, opens play in a four-team Regional on Saturday in Champaign, Ill., against host Illinois (18-7). The No. 19 ranked Commodores (11-9) are the No. 2 seed in the region.

Top Regional seed Fresno State meets Eastern Kentucky at 9 a.m., followed by the Vanderbilt-Illinois match at noon. Winners play Sunday in the finals for a trip to nationals at College Station, Texas, beginning May 15. That winner likely will play No. 1 overall seed Northwestern in the round of 16.
• The Vanderbilt Lacrosse team will open NCAA play Sunday when the Commodores meet host Notre Dame. Vanderbilt beat Notre Dame recently in Nashville.

• Vanderbilt is among 14 teams headed to the NCAA men's golf Regionals in Bowling Green, Ky., May 14-16. The Commodores joined area teams MTSU, Austin Peay and host Western Kentucky.

• The Vanderbilt women's golf team opens NCAA regional play Thursday at Gainesville, Fla.

Metros open soccer season at Bradenton

The Nashville Metros open their Premier Development League soccer season when they visit the Bradenton Academics on Thursday afternoon, starting a two-game Florida road trip.

The Metros then travel to the Central Florida Kraze Saturday. The Metros, under new coach Richard Askey, will play their home opener Sunday, May 17 at Ezell Park against Baton Rouge Capitals.
