Tennessee's men's basketball team is the top-ranked squad in the country for the first time in the program's history, earning the distinction in the latest Associated Press poll and in the USA Today/ESPN poll.
The Volunteers (25-2), ranked No. 2 last week, beat formerly undefeated Memphis 66-62 on Saturday night at FedEx Forum. Tennessee received 69 first-place votes and 1,797 total points from a nationwide media panel. The Volunteers were a unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN poll.
Tennessee will face a big test as the nation's top team with a Tuesday visit to No. 18 Vanderbilt.
Memphis (26-1), which had been the top-ranked team for five weeks, slipped to No. 2.
North Carolina is third, despite picking up a pair of first-place votes, while UCLA moved up two spots to fourth.
