COLUMBIA, S.C. – Steven Liddle had four hits and one run scored but Vanderbilt lost 11-3 to South Carolina on Sunday.
The Commodores (27-20, 10-13) were swept in the weekend series with the Gamecocks (30-18, 12-12) and were outscored by a total of 33-13. More importantly, Vanderbilt dropped to fourth in the SEC East.
With two weeks remaining, VU is eighth overall in conference play among the 12 SEC teams. Only the top eight make the conference tournament.
Liddle led off the game with a single and scored on Curt Casali’s one-out single as the Commodores jumped to a 1-0 lead for the third time in as many days. They did not score again until Andrew Giobbi drove in two with a single in the eighth.
In between the Gamecocks hit home runs off three different VU pitchers, starter Caleb Cotham and relievers Sonny Gray and Richie Goodenow, capped by a pinch-hit, three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh by Parker Bangs.
