John Jenkins knows that he can’t be in “the zone” every game. That doesn’t mean that he can’t do so regularly.
“I’ve been getting there a lot lately,” the Vanderbilt freshman guard said Monday. “So I’m trying to keep it up.”
That’s not the only thing he’s been doing a lot lately.
Jenkins’ hot hand led to him being named Southeastern Conference men’s basketball Freshman of the Week on Monday. It was the second straight week he earned that honor.
The Station Camp High School product averaged 13 points and four rebounds in victories over Middle Tennessee State and Florida last week. He averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of triumphs the previous week, when he was honored for the first time.
Jenkins scored 13 points in each game last week and extended to seven his streak of consecutive games in double figures. He also made three 3-pointers in each and extended to six his streak of consecutive contests with at least that many.
For the season he has made 47.4 percent of his 3s (37-for-78), including 59.4 percent in the last six games.
Tennessee’s Bobby Maze was the SEC Player of the Week.
The Commodores play at Alabama, 8 p.m. Wednesday in their first SEC road game of the season. The game will be shown live on Comcast Sports Southeast (Comcast Ch 27).
