Christina Wirth had 22 points and five rebounds – both team-highs – as 17th-ranked Vanderbilt defeated Virginia Tech 73-42 Saturday in the championship of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Classic at Memorial Gymnasium.

Wirth was named most valuable player of the tournament. She averaged 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in the Commodores’ two victories. Forward Hannah Tuomi and guard Merideth Marsh also were named to the all-tournament team.

Wirth’s 3-point shot with 8:21 to play in the first half capped a 14-2 run, which put VU in front for good. For the game, she made eight of 16 field goal attempts (two of four 3-pointers) and four of five free throw attempts.

Vanderbilt (6-1) made 54.8 percent of its shots and limited previously unbeaten Virginia Tech (5-1) to 30.6 percent shooting (15-for-49).

Marsh finished with 12 points and Jessica Mooney had nine. Tuomi made four of five field goal attempts but was held to eight points, the first time this season the sophomore failed to reach double digits.

The Commodores play Radford on Tuesday (7 p.m., Memorial Gymnasium) then finish the week with two games in California.
