VU's Alex improves at golf championship; Wu falls in tennis championship

OWINGS MILL, Md. – Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex made two birdies and no bogeys on the front nine and shot a 2-over (74) in the third round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship on Thursday.

The freshman, who qualified as an individual, matched her birdie total for the first two rounds combined when she made one at the par-3 12th (her third hole) and the par-4 18th, a hole on which she made double bogey in the first round.

Her third-round score was five strokes better than her first round and seven better than her second round.

• Also on Thursday, freshman tennis player Jackie Wu was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell, the defending national champion, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.

Wu ended the season with a 26-11 singles record, which included victories over nine ranked opponents.
