Wife of former GM blasts Titans on local radio

Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 7:03pm

The wife of former Tennessee Titans General Manager Floyd Reese blasted Titans coach Jeff Fisher and the organization in comments made on WGFX-FM 104.5 The Zone Thursday on the SportsZone with George Plaster.

Sally Reese intimated that her husband was essentially fired with no notice after 21 years with the organization, and was not given the opportunity to clean out his office and that his resignation was written not by her husband but by team Senior Executive Vice President Steve Underwood.

Floyd Reese, who left the Titans organization in January 2007 after having a role with the team since 1986, had stayed quiet regarding his exit, but his wife Sally was in town and called to air her grievances after hearing comments made by Zone contributor John McClain, who covered the franchise when it was in Houston, about the Fisher-Reese situation on Wednesday.

“I was here in Nashville, and I was listening to John McClain speak, and I just had to kind of set the record straight, because my husband won’t,” she said. “There was no fighting between Jeff and Floyd. I will say this, if pressed, that different people called us for months before and said they were picking sides…

“So bottom line is my husband just went along and did his job and everything was just fine and one day he went to work and said, ‘Gee after 21 years we’re going in a different direction.’ Floyd still kind of didn’t get that. It was like, ‘What, what’ Now what I read and I hear all that stuff. My husband was totally oblivious. All he did was his job.”

Floyd Reese is now a senior advisor for the New England Patriots and was on a plane to London where the Pats, who hammered the Titans 59-0 Sunday in Foxboro, Mass., are to play against Tampa Bay on Sunday, and was unaware that his wife was going to make the radio appearance.

“He won’t like it. My son just called me a little while ago, and had I told him, he would have gotten through to Floyd on the plane. So I didn’t tell him either,” Sally Reese said. “But it’s all good. Oh, and the last thing when the statement was issued, when Floyd issued a statement. Floyd didn’t issue a statement. Underwood made it up. That’s another thing. I don’t know if that’s a lawsuit, but being a vindictive wife, I would have done a lawsuit.”

Sally Reese, who alleged that her husband saved Fisher from being fired twice in his tenure, indicated that she was happy that the Patriots routed the Titans in the fashion they did and hoped it would be worse than the final score.

“He kept Jeff from getting fired two times. So if he’d let him get fired, he’d still be there. Hello? That’s hindsight.” Reese said. “But you know paybacks — can I say bitch? — payback’s a bitch. Sunday I was hoping they’d run it to 100. And I love Tennessee. All you Tennessee people, my dad’s from Tennessee, but when you get sucker punched, you want to sucker punch back. My husband said it would be very uncool. He said, ‘We have to play them again.’ I said I only hope.”

Sally Reese also refuted that Fisher did not have input into the draft process while Floyd Reese was GM.

“Floyd had Devin Hester on the phone. He was going to the Titans. And Jeff wanted LenDale White. So Floyd backed it up, and you guys got LenDale. The Chicago Bears got [Hester], and that would have been the fourth Rookie of the Year my husband would have had. Not too shabby,” Reese said. “I just wanted to set the record straight, because sometimes when I hear what John has to say, I have to say B.S. to it. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

The Titans declined comment on the situation. Efforts to reach McClain were unsuccessful.

However, Plaster admitted he was taken aback by Reese’s words.

“I was stunned by the phone call, and I guess if I could do it all over again, I would have cut the call off about a third of the way through. This is not how I want our show to operate. It never has been, and it never will be,” Plaster said.

I caught the tail end of this on the radio and wondered what was going on . . . very interesting . . . can't wait to hear the entire audio.

I heard Sally spewing forth on how poorly Floyd was treated. It was unbelievable that she was allowed to spout her opinions without being challenged on anything. If Floyd was so fabulous, why hasn't someone else hired him as a GM?

It was just a matter of time until the Grey Goose combined with Sally's ego took complete control of her big mouth! I'm surprised it took this long for it to happen. Poor Floyd!

Fired with no notice? REALLY SALLY??? Well, what about Randall Godfrey, Eddie George, and Steve McNair. I think your husband had a hand in those "surprises". Steve could not even go back to the facility. There is an old saying that you get as good as you give. And let's talk about Devon Hester vs. Lendell White...so WHAT??? Lendell has been solid for the Titans since he has been with them. And who was responsible for PacMan? I believe that was the GM at the time. In fact, I believe I heard Floyd bragging on one of the radio shows at the time about the Titans getting PacMan. Enough said!

It sounds to me like Floyd Reese understands life must better than his wife.

As a business the NFL is run much like a gang of neighborhood toughs & punks.

I make the above statement with apologies to the Wellington Mara family.

What a joke this lady is. The only thing she accomplished was bringing more attention to and more criticism of Floyd's bad decisions. Let's face it, Floyd's contracts were the worst in the biz. He loaded everybody's contracts on the back end of the deal knowing that we wouldn't be able to pay it and crossing his fingers that he could renegotiate a deal. All too often that didn't happen. Reinfeldt needs to step up and pay attention, because unfortunately, he's losing a lot of our best players to free agency as well. Our GM has to find a way to keep our best players in Tennessee. Period. Floyd didn't do that. Now he's gone, and I say good riddance.

Better watch out, Sally.
"Pink Slip" Floyd might renegotiate your contract...

I am sorry, but was it not Floyd who got us in salary cap jail for 3 years. Mason, Rolle, etc. She is a bitter wife of a former Titans exec. I listen to 104.5 the zone and I am appauled that they would let that go on. She sounds like Floyd had no blame in all of that and that is not true. Floyd messed up a lot as well, and I do not know how many draft picks he got right, but I would bet he had his hand in a lot of Bust draft picks, i.e. Pacman, Andre Woolfolk, etc. Come on Sally, Reese is a big boy. he can speak for himself. And, if he does not want to speak for himself and move on with his life and career, I think you need to do the same. Byt the way, he saved Jeff from getting fired 2 times. No, I think Fisher and the coaching staff did that one on theor own. I did not see Floyd on the sidelines durong those games and coaching those players. If you listen top 104.5 they have a weekly segment called "Put a Sock in it". Well, Sally, this sock is for you, put a sock in it.

I find it curious all the folks whose delicate sensibilities have been offended by Mrs. Reese expressing her opinion. Like it or not, she has a right to one and to share it as she sees fit.

Interesting how I didn't hear this kind of outcry when Vince Young's mental health was being debated on the basis of rumors and innuendo in our fair city.

Double standard much?

Too many times people bad mouth someone when they are not around. Floyd did a great job while he was here and nobody complained about his "signings" back then. All of the good teams in the NFL had cap issues, this isn't something Floyd invented. He did well in the draft and got his players into camp. Sally probably shouldn't have gone on the radio to air her dirty laundry, but she made sense. I too was hoping to see a few more scores by the Patriots since I was already watching a train wreck and I'm a Titans' fan.

Sounds like Silent Floyd is married to the ghost of Marge Schott.

By: cookeville on 10/23/09 at 12:37

I have a feeling that Fisher has been running the asylum for quite some time now and the GM does what he's told.

By: jps13pat on 10/23/09 at 11:52

titanmama, you are correct in saying that Mrs. Reese has a right to her opinion and has a right to express it. I have a right to call her an idiot for her opinion, and I will take this opportunity to oblige that right. Mrs. Reese is an idiot. Don't go meddling in the affairs of your husband's occupation behind his back. Even if she was right (which she wasn't), that's just plain dumb.

And empire3, maybe you weren't paying attention, but there were a lot of people complaining about Reese well before he got the boot. You may be correct in saying that all of the good teams in the NFL had cap issues, but there was one major difference. We consistently lost our best players on account of our cap problems. That didn't happen in other cities.

By: courier37027 on 10/24/09 at 11:18

I am glad someone in the Reese family has clear and loud command of English. Floyd Reese's response here would probably be like his old The Zone interviews. "Uh, well, George, ya know, we can't tell, uh but we will make the right, uh, can't really tell right now...".

By: garrthom on 10/24/09 at 12:52

George Plaster is an idiot. This is exactly the way you should want your show to operate. The ratings should go through the roof. This is the kind of stuff people want to hear.

Perhaps Bud and the rest of the Keystone Cops could spend some time in Western Pennsylvania and job shadow a real organization. The Rooney's know how to do it.., the Adams' do not. There is a reason the Steelers have 6 Super Bowl Championships and it starts with leadership.

Listening to Floyds wife explains why he probably lost his job. HER. Maybe she needs to learn to keep her big mouth shut. Her voice reminds me of some uneducated hillbilly from the backwoods of Tennessee who tries to get her fat nose into everybodys business. I had heard that was her way now this mouthing off just proves it.. Is she trying to get Floyd blackballed by the NFL or any other possible future opportunity. Would you hire him if you knew she came with it? Talk about burning bridges. Maybe Floyd needs to give her walking papers. I am sure he does not this kind of help.
